Friday Five | No. 5

I know it’s been a few weeks friends, but have no fear, because the Friday Five is back this week! I’m still working on a blog post recapping my recent Southwestern US National Parks hiking road trip extravaganza, but I thought it would be fun today to share my five of my favorite photos from the trip in time for National Park Week!! Let me tell you, it was NOT EASY narrowing these down to five! I saw so many parks, hiked (and drove) so many miles, saw so much indescribably beautiful scenery and took SO MANY photos! My cousin was kind enough to take all of these photos for me on my Nikon and my iPhone! It’s always so awkward handing your camera to someone and saying, “take a photo of me walking”, but looking at the camera and smiling for every photo gets real boring, real quick!

Pro tip for when you have a specific idea for a photo and need someone else to take it: take a photo of the other person first doing what you want to do in your photo. Then show them on the back of your camera what the finished product looks like so they have a picture in their head of what the photo needs to look like when they take it! Plus the settings are all dialed in correctly then for them too! That’s my little secret for you!

One.
Delicate Arch | Arches National Park | Moab, UT
Arches was incredible! I think this was the hardest hike that we did all trip (except maybe Devil’s Bridge in the rain). It was a mile and a half straight uphill hike to get to this glorious point, but when you turn the corner and see Delicate Arch glistening in the sun, it’s ALL worth it! Also, GO BLUE! ;)

Two.
Zion National Park | Springdale, UT
Zion was my favorite National Park overall! The scenery was just stunning everywhere you looked. We did four hikes here, but I wish we could have spent a few days here doing more. I really want to come back and do Angel’s Landing. That’s on my list for next time!

Three.
Bryce Canyon National Park | Bryce, UT

Bryce Canyon, like every other National Park, had STUNNING scenery! It was so cool going in winter and getting to experience Bryce with snow covering the hoodoos and trails. This switchback below was on the Navajo Loop Trail and we connected it to the Queen’s Garden to extend our hike. It was one of the most serene and peaceful hikes I’ve ever been on, not to mention, we had just about the whole trail to ourselves!

Four.
Mesa Arch | Canyonlands |Moab, UT
The 5 AM wakeup call to hike to Mesa Arch for sunrise was so worth it! I photographed the sun rising up through the arch (it’s the header photo above the blog post title ^) and it was incredible to see! After a few minutes of the sun rising, we climbed up onto the top of the arch to watch it get higher into the sky.

Five.
The Grand Canyon South Rim | Grand Canyon National Park | Arizona
Pictures just do not do the vastness of the Grand Canyon justice. I couldn’t believe how big, how wide and how deep the canyon was! It was just stunning and the 6 miles we hiked here in the snow was one of my favorite days of the trip! This is also another park I can’t wait to come back to and I want to hike down to the Colorado River next time! #hikinggoals

Sam + Peter | Yards Park Washington, D.C. Engagement Photographer

Sam and Peter’s Yards Park engagement session was an absolute dream! When Sam and I were brainstorming locations for their Washington, D.C. engagement photos, she mentioned this park and it was perfect! I loved the architecture of the bridge, the greenery and the waterfront. It also had a really cool and modern waterfall and pool. It was also in an awesome up and coming area in DC and right next to Nationals Stadium (you know I totally headed to the game after… I’m crossing ballparks off my list)! I had a blast with Sam and Peter capturing their love for each other and it just shines through in their photos!

Charming Charleston, South Carolina

Back in March of this year, before the crazy business of wedding season kicked off, I headed down to Charleston, South Carolina for two days! It was my first time visiting the South and it did not disappoint. Charleston was unbelievably gorgeous. I walked and walked and walked all around the town with my camera the first day I was there taking pictures. I absolutely loved walking along the water down by the Battery and literally could have kept walking along that path with that view of the water for hours. The gorgeous mansions and horse drawn carriage’s pulling visitors around just added to the charm of the city. The food was also on another level in Charleston! I was worried I wouldn’t be able to find any decent vegan and gluten free options in Charleston since seafood/southern comfort food rules down there, but I was pleasantly surprised! Motobar had the best brussels sprouts ever (I was so sad to find out that they recently closed), Taco Boy had the coolest vibe and absolutely killed it and there was a Jeni’s there too which has the best artisan ice cream! I so badly wish we had one in Detroit! Charleston, you stole my heart and I cannot wait to come back for another visit!

I saw so many weddings around downtown Charleston! I couldn’t resist snapping one of this gorgeous Battery Park Charleston wedding! White Point Gardens is such a gorgeous wedding location! I would absolutely love to photograph a destination wedding in Charleston, SC! Just throwing that out there universe! ;)

I want all of the pink houses.

We happened to wander down an old cobblestone street that made me feel like I was in Europe! These cute houses had the cutest doorways and I couldn’t resist sneaking up on the steps for a few photos.

When you catch the sunset in Charleston and the light looks like this, you naturally have to have a mini photoshoot!

Windy City | Chicago Portrait Photographer

My sister and I started a new tradition this past year to celebrate our birthday’s as they’re only a day apart! We decided we would go somewhere to celebrate and have an experience verse buying each other gifts. This year we chose to spend a long weekend in Chicago and it did not disappoint! It was my sister’s first time in the Windy City and we had a blast. Of course we also had to squeeze in a few portrait sessions while we were there because the city has such gorgeous backdrops. How stunning is that skyline! Chicago, you’re beautiful!

A visit to Chicago is not complete without riding the ferris wheel at Navy Pier!

When I travel, I always plan my trip around where I want to eat! I know I’m not alone in this, right? This is mainly due to the fact that I love good food, but also because I eat mostly vegan (I do still eat eggs and honey) and gluten free, and if I don’t do some leg work beforehand, it can be hard to find places where I can order more than the side salad! I read wonderful things about Lyfe kitchen and it did not disappoint!

We loved walking around the Lincoln Park Zoo even though a lot of the animals weren’t out!

We also saw the Sox play! I would have much rather seen the Cubs, but they weren’t in town! You win some, you lose some! ;) Regardless, we had fun! Until next time, Chicago!
